Privacy Notice
Your account and uploaded lectures are stored privately with Gistful. Live transcript uses the speech recognition built into your browser or device, which may process audio online, so Gistful cannot promise it stays on your device. The setup check tells you what to expect before you start.
What Gistful stores
- Account data: your email address, a salted password hash, verification state, and preferences.
- Lecture metadata: titles, spaces, start and stop times, durations, language, and the recorder format.
- Your content: final transcript text and your corrections, typed notes, handwriting strokes, bookmarks, highlights, and study items.
- Audio you choose to upload, stored privately on Gistful's servers and never publicly.
- Share links you create, including their permissions, expiry, and last-opened time.
- Signed-in device sessions: a browser and operating system label, approximate network prefix, and last-seen time.
- Limited diagnostic events, such as live transcript errors and failed uploads. These never include lecture content.
How live transcript works
Gistful asks the speech-recognition feature available in your browser or operating system to produce transcript text. Depending on your device and settings, audio used for recognition may be processed by a remote service. Gistful does not control that service's availability, retention, or accuracy. Your independent Gistful recording follows the storage choices shown in your account.
Stored on this device first
Audio, transcript lines, notes, and bookmarks you created while offline or before an upload finished. They stay in this browser until they are safely saved to your account.
Sharing
Your sessions are private by default. A recipient can view only the parts you enable through a revocable share link. Audio sharing is off by default. You choose whether a recipient can view the transcript, view notes, play audio, or download an export.
Retention and deletion
- Lecture audio is kept until you delete it. You can delete audio only and keep the transcript and notes.
- Trash keeps deleted lectures and spaces for 30 days, then removes them.
- Server copies of exports are removed after 24 hours.
- Diagnostic events are kept for 30 days.
- Deleting your account removes your rows and private files. Copies in our backups may remain until the backup retention period ends.
Cookies and analytics
Gistful uses one essential, HttpOnly session cookie. Product analytics record which features and pages you use and for how long, never the content of your lectures, audio, transcripts or notes. They help us decide what to improve, and you can switch them off at any time in Settings. Essential security and quota logs remain either way.
Your choices
You can export your data, delete audio, delete lectures, revoke share links, sign out other devices, and delete your account from Settings.
